Dear Friend,
Did God not say in his word that there is an enemy and that he comes to ‘kill, steal and destroy’? When God placed his call on your heart and life he did it because he chose you to speak a word to his people in a way that really no one else could. You knew in the beginning that the call was somehow special and it was so real that you couldn’t deny it. You even accepted it knowing that not all around you were supportive, but it was strong and evident and oh so passionate. Why was that? Because God knew if he didn’t make it that plain and moving you might not accept it as coming from Him. At the same time, there was someone standing in the wings, a spectator, watching and listening as you contemplated accepting that invitation to devote your life to serving the Lord and others. You have an enemy. His name is Satan. Do you want to know why your call has been under so much attack from so many areas? Because as you are so loved and cherished by One, you are also hated and loathed by another whose sole purpose is to kill, steal and destroy. He devises to kill your opportunities, steal your joy and destroy your relationships, all in order to stop you in your tracks from completing that wonderful call. Since he cannot stop you from accepting it, he devises a plan to thwart every move you make while attempting to fulfill it. The devil knows how very talented and gifted you are, so he literally assigns an agenda to others to make your life miserable. And he rejoices when you see yourself as the victim and suffer the consequences of his devices. Friend, there is a way to save your ministry and at the same time reverse the challenges listed above, and walk out your call with joy unspeakable. Remember where the Lord said, “Except the Lord build the house they labor in vain that build it?” Ps. 127:1, If God admits in his word that we have an enemy, whose sole purpose is to keep us from serving God and others, and if He also explains to us that after he left this earth that He’s done all He’s going to do about the enemy, then that leaves it up to us to follow his instructions in keeping the enemy off our turf, all of it. So, if we, even a little bit, decide to ‘build the house’ OUR way,(we can do this unknowingly) we open the door for the enemy to place not only unwanted agendas on us but not even sent of God. We blame God and others for our suffering, when he not only warned us, but gave us the exact formula for setting ourselves free. Now, if you think I’m just talking about spiritual warfare, I’m not. I’m talking about a whole array of simple Bible principles that when easily applied on a regular basis, we are guaranteed success in reversing the attacks of the enemy and bringing so much success, happiness and joy in our lives we won’t know what to do with it all. It’ll have to spill over and delight those around us. People will actually be attracted to you like a magnet because they will want to experience the joy and success they see you have. And you will have learned the simple secrets of a life on track and one that’s finally working according to the original vision you had when you first began. And as for you male pastors, didn’t the Lord promise in Ps. 128:3, “Your wife shall be content in your home, as a fruitful vine, and your children are vigorous and healthy?” vs. 5, “The Lord shall continually bless you with heaven’s blessings as well as with human joys.” For you women pastors, the Lord will bless your husband’s as well. When I coach pastors and their wives and when I read the statistics concerning pastors, their problems, and leaving the ministry, I am truly saddened as to how much ground the enemy has actually taken from God’s generals. But I’m here to tell you there is an answer for you. Before I tell you the good news, let’s look at some startling statistics (George Barna publishes statistics that can be verfied to match the following:)
· 1500 pastors leave the ministry each month due to moral failure, spiritual burnout or contention in their churches. · 4,000 new churches begin each year, but over 7,000 churches close. · 50% of pastors’ marriages will end in divorce · 50% of pastors would leave the ministry, due to discouragement, if they had a way of support · 80% of pastors & 84% of spouses feel unqualified as well as discouraged in their roles · 70% of pastors feel greatly underpaid · 80% who enter the ministry leave within the first five years · 90% of pastors admit their seminary or Bible school training gave them only a fair to poor preparation for their ministry work · 85% are disgusted with dealing with problem instigators and uncooperative people · 90% have confessed being completely disillusioned with what they envisioned the ministry would be like before entering. · 70% felt secure in God’s calling them initially, but after three years, only 50% still felt called. · 70% of pastors fight depression regularly as well as 80% of their adult children seek help for depression. · 40% admitted having an extra-marital affair since beginning their ministry · 80% of pastors’ wives wish their spouse would choose another profession. · 70% of pastors’ confess they do not have a close friend, a confidant or mentor. · 95% of pastors’ confess they do not regularly pray with their spouses. · 85% of pastors’ spend less than 15 minutes a day in prayer. · 70% said the only time spent in the Bible is when they are preparing their sermons. · 81% of pastors’ said there was no regular discipleship program or effective effort of mentoring their people or teaching them to deepen their Christian walk as well as no ongoing connection with coaching for themselves to strengthen their leadership role. · 90% of pastors’ are frequently fatigued and worn out. · 89% of pastors’ have considered leaving the ministry at some time · 77% stated that they did not have a good marriage.
As sad as this data is, we need to understand it is not God’s intent that service for Him brings destruction. On the contrary, serving God should build us up into greater expectations for the future, not less. When Jesus left his disciples he assured them that ‘greater works shall you do than I did because I go to my Father.’ And then he reminded them that the Holy Spirit would be sent to guarantee the provision of this power to carry out those works he was speaking of. In trying to divide these statistics and also consider the words of the pastors poled we need to focus on some clues that are relevant to disclosing the root of the problem. Because in order to understand this and therefore solve it, it’s imperative to use discernment. It appears from the confessions of the pastors’ that we have several areas where there are leaks in the boat, so to speak. Let’s look at probably the first and most important aspect, the one that deals with the pastors’ relationship with the Lord. 70% have no one to share with, no confidant or mentor. 95% do not pray with their spouses regularly. 85% spend less than 15 minutes a day seeking the Lord in prayer and 70% only search the Bible when preparing a sermon. There’s a clue here, little to no relationship equals a weak spirit. See how the enemy gets in here? Next, If 90% of pastors’ admit their seminary or Bible school training gave them only a fair to poor preparation for their ministry work and 81% confess they virtually have no ongoing mentoring or connection with a coaching relationship to strengthen their leadership role, is it any wonder the enemy is easily taking advantage of all the other bullet points and combining such a weaponry against the pastors? I’m frankly thanking God for His grace they’ve lasted as long as they have.
It says in Daniel 11:32, The people who KNOW their God shall be strong and do exploits, or great things. The clue; those who KNOW God intimately, those who are STRONG (from rubbing shoulders with the Holy Spirit) will then be able to do GREAT THINGS or exploits. So how can these things be so? Okay, think of what the pastors’ confessed. “I spend 15 minutes, on average, a day in prayer to God.” I love their honesty, I’m truly stoked by it, it shows integrity. Remember when Jesus said to his disciples, “Could you not tarry with me one hour?” He had asked them to pray for only one hour and they fell asleep. It wasn’t meant as a ‘guilt trip’. He was asking them to discern why it was so difficult to spend one hour a day in the prayer mode. Those disciples were no different than we are today. Below is a list; a few reasons we give for prayerlessness: - I care for people but my heart just doesn’t feel led to pray for them always - I try to pray but it seems like a constant repeat of wants, desires and needs - I feel as though no one’s listening, even though the other part of me knows that’s not true. - I’m flat bored when I pray - God already knows what I want & need, why do I have to keep repeating it? - I feel stupid praying sometimes, because I feel like I’m talking to myself. - I’d rather God be more real, give me some manifestation that he’s listening - I feel I could pray better and more often if I was happier in my service to God - I’m too tired and over-worked; it feels like just one more duty. - My spouse doesn’t like praying with me, or it seems a struggle to get others involved. - My mind wonders off so often while trying to pray I think, what’s the use. - Not knowing how to receive the power in prayer others share they have. - My prayers are not answered as often as I’d like, so why bother. Do you want to know how I know all this? Because I’ve been there. And do you know what I found out? God’s not mad at me. Actually, I’ve been madder at God over the years than the other way around. Want to know how I got over it? I’ll share a little secret with you. There’s no third choice. I’ve walked away from God physically and in my heart. It’s called back-slidding. But I couldn’t find any middle ground. It’s either, or. I hated the devil for all the trouble he’d caused me so I refused to be a part of his camp, yet I knew the further away from God I walked, the closer I was to the other side. There came a moment when I knew I’d better get hot or cold. Knowing truth comes with a responsibility. I’ll share a few tid-bits of myself in a moment. But first, more importantly, if you’re a pastor thinking about hanging it up and walking out, let me ask you a question: Think!! 1500 a month leaving the ministry????? So, how many of those 1500 are NOT called at all? Does God make THAT many mistakes? Are 1500 pastors a month so deaf and/or ignorant they cannot know the difference between God’s voice and their own?
NO! An astounding NO! I would say that most all, if not all have heard from God Himself. Then what’s going on? I’ll give you 3 clues:
1. Remember the list that we went over at the beginning of this letter including many of the incredible attacks on a pastor from the enemy? You’re called, my dear brother, but you need to know how to get the enemy off your back, your ministry, your family. 2. Some leaders have not been able to define their exact niche IN the call, namely which part of the Five-fold ministry they are to walk in as well as instruction in walking it out. Often times these things are not clear or either addressed in seminary. 3. Then, once you determine your exact office, how do you get acclimated into that position with the least frustration and confusion for yourself and your family?
Now, for the Good News!
What Can Pastors’ Do To Turn This Around?
How can you avoid becoming just another one of these statistics? Or if you’ve already left the ministry and your ‘sense of call’ remained, know that God sometimes calls us to do something different. Without struggling with trying to figure out the human reasons, why not concentrate on where to go from here? Since ‘the call’ is without repentance, doesn’t it make sense to find out where you fit best and also find ways to walk out your call with the power and joy you’ve always wanted? It’s not about just surviving in the ministry, but it’s about excelling in it! Then doesn’t it make sense to stop trying to get there on your own? What has it cost you to not know exactly what to do and how to do it? Imagine if you hired a coach, a mentor who could show you exactly what to do and how to do it successfully…how much would that be worth to you to get the answers that could get you out of the stress and pain, the frustration that has taken a toll on your life, marriage, ministry, family and congregation? So many people hold off hiring a coach or a mentor because they think they can figure it out on their own. They think they can buy a bunch of books, eBooks, CD’s or just read their Bibles a little more and the answers will all come together. What have you already tried that didn't work? Notice, each session reading is like one piece of a 500 piece jigsaw puzzle. You buy 5 books… and you still only have 5 pieces of a 500 piece puzzle. Once you realize that nothing you are doing is working and you're completely frustrated with yourself and with God, who doesn't seem to hear you, would it make sense to see if God truly has an answer for you, but that He's choosing to deliver it through – someone who's has been there, and done it, someone who’s personally walked through the rough places and found the answers that work? And that person can show you exactly what to do and how to do it. So, instead of fumbling around, trying to guess at what works, imagine if instead you had a mentor or a coach who could literally take you, step by step and lead you through a roadmap, a Biblical principled blueprint of what to do. A mentor-coach who was available via telephone each week walking you through specific steps until your life was finally taking the shape of your original dreams when you first imagined working for the greatest employer of all, the Lord. There's only one thing holding you back. You. Somehow all of us think we 'should' have the answers and when we don't, we wrestle with the thing God calls 'pride'. Interesting though, God hates pride and it's the one thing that holds all of back from getting where we need to go in life. The "I'm capable of figuring this out myself" syndrome. Why are 1500 of God's Generals walking out on their call instead of turning to someone for help to get answers? Answer: Pride. Don't be a statistic, I can help...and guess what, every time I even think of walking in pride, God allows something in my life to humble me back to reality. So working with me you'll not have to worry that I think I'm bigger or higher or more important than you are, because God let me know quite a long time ago that what he gave me to help others with is only by his grace, not by any works of my own. I do know my capabilities, my gifts, my talents and the wisdom and knowledge God has allowed me to see are meant to help you and others so you don't neglect the great things God has placed in you, and I do mean great.
